Castle Park Bristol

Terraced Housing and Masterplan Design

Located in the centre of Bristol, Castle Park has long been a lifeless, underutilised space that does not meaningfully engage with its surroundings. An existing building on site (to be demolished) also breaks the axial connection between three crucial landmarks. Thus, our main aim was to create a terraced housing development to reinstate that lost historical connection, enliven the park and enhance community spirit.

To link up the landmarks, we created new footpaths to join them. The material and width of footpaths were varied so as to segregate spaces by the level of privacy. Throughout the scheme, pockets of communal space were inserted for residents to linger and socialise. They also act as thresholds between private and public spaces, allowing a gentle gradation from the bustling pedestrian streets to the residential buildings.
